G80 M3 & G82 M4 Side Skirts: Extensions vs Full Replacement

BMW G80 G82 G83 M3 M4 2021-Present Carbon Fiber Side Skirt Extensions w/small winglet (Unitexclusives)

G80 M3 side skirts come in two kinds. An extension is a carbon blade that bolts on under the factory side skirt, which stays on the car. A full replacement swaps out the gloss black trim on the factory skirt for a carbon one. An extension makes the car look lower, while a replacement turns the trim itself into carbon. We’ll also cover which of ours fit the G82 M4, how each one mounts, and what to watch for once they’re on.

Key takeaways

  • Extensions keep the factory side skirt and add a carbon edge below it. Full replacements take the place of the factory gloss black trim.
  • Our best-selling side skirt is the Side Skirt Extensions V2, listed for both the G80 M3 and the G82/G83 M4.
  • Our full replacement sets are made separately for the M3 and the M4, and BMW also uses different part numbers for each car.
  • BMW’s own M Performance carbon sill pieces are sold one side at a time.
  • Low carbon edges need care around tall curbs, parking stops and jacks.

Side skirt extensions vs full replacement: what’s the difference?

From the factory, the M3 and M4 sills join the front and rear aero pieces in a gloss black band around the car. BMW describes the M3 and M4 as having “prominent side sill extensions with attachments to the front and rear aprons” in its launch press release. Aftermarket side skirts change that gloss black trim.

An extension mounts beneath the factory side skirt. Our small winglet listing puts it plainly: “These do not replace your OEM skirts, these are extensions.” You keep the gloss black trim and add a carbon shelf under it.

A full replacement removes the gloss black trim. Our listings describe it as “a direct replacement of the gloss black trim which is detachable from the OEM side skirts.” The carbon becomes the panel you see, at the factory height.

The extensions: V2 or small winglet?

Side Skirt Extensions V2

The V2 is a slim, flat carbon blade under each factory sill, with angled tips and no winglet. The listing describes it as a single dark line running almost from wheel to wheel, reaching a little past the sill’s lower edge. To the eye the car sits lower, and the factory panel above keeps the shape BMW gave it.

It’s 100% prepreg dry carbon. Our photos show gloss, and you can get matte if you tell us when you order. Choose G80 M3 or G82 M4 in the options. For a G83 M4 convertible, check with us before ordering.

Extensions with a small winglet

The listing says it’s “NOT the Mperformance style with the large winglet.” It’s an undermount extension that ends in a small flared winglet. The screw holes are all pre-drilled, and it comes with self-tapping screws.

Pick the V2 for a clean line, or the small winglet set for a hint of flare at the rear. For the difference between dry carbon and the heavier wet layup that other extensions use, see our prepreg vs wet layup guide.

Full replacement side skirts: OEM style or MP style?

If the gloss black trim is the part you don’t like, a full replacement swaps it for carbon. Our M3 listings call these 1:1 copies that fit “without any extra screw holes using all OEM fitment, tabs and fixing points. (No drilling required).”

OEM style (no winglet)

This follows the factory trim’s shape with no winglet. It’s the quieter of the two. The shape stays factory and only the finish changes to carbon.

MP style (with winglet)

This copies the M Performance shape, with a tall winglet standing up at the rear end, in front of the rear wheel. It’s a lot louder than the OEM style.

Do G82 M4 side skirts fit the G80 M3?

Not always. The extensions are one design for both cars. The V2 and the small winglet set are both listed for the G80 M3 and the G82/G83 M4.

The full replacements are a different story. We list the M3 OEM style and M3 MP style sets for the G80 M3 only, and the M4 OEM style set for the G82/G83 M4 only. BMW does the same with its own carbon sill pieces. The M3 right-side part is 51192473040 and the M4 right-side part is 51192473414. If you’re unsure which you have, text us your model and year before you order.

The same goes for “G80 side skirts on a G20.” Our M3 and M4 side skirts are listed for the G80 and G82/G83 only, not for the regular 3 Series.

What about BMW’s M Performance side skirts?

BMW sells M Performance carbon sill pieces for both cars. In its M Performance Parts announcement, BMW says “M Performance carbon side skirt trims make the vehicle appear longer.”

At BimmerWorld, the M3 right-side rocker panel cover (51192473040) lists at $1,241.60. The page says it’s made to order and BMW doesn’t keep it in stock. The M4 right-side sill insert (51192473414) lists at $1,216.00, and its left-side partner is 51192473415. Each of those is one side. Our V2 listing gives the M3 pair as 51192473040/041 and the M4 pair as 51192473414/415. Our V2 set comes as a left and right pair in one box.

How do G80 M3 side skirts mount?

Here’s how our listings say each type mounts:

  • V2 extensions: bolt-on, through pre-drilled holes along a raised rib on top of each blade. The listing calls it easy bolt-on work.
  • Small winglet extensions: pre-drilled screw holes, self-tapping screws included.
  • M3 full replacements and the M4 MP style set: OEM tabs and fixing points, no drilling.
  • M4 OEM style set: replaces the detachable gloss black trim. Text us for mounting details.

Our listings don’t describe the factory clips or rivets, so we won’t guess at removal here. Follow the instructions that come with the part. Test fit before you install anything: if a part doesn’t fit the vehicle listed on its product page, contact us before installing and we’ll cover the return shipping for a refund or replacement.

Living with low side skirts: curbs, jacks and lifts

Once it’s on, an extension is the lowest edge along each side of the car. Our V2 listing says to give tall curbs and concrete parking stops a little extra room when you pull in close. Do the same with any lower carbon edge.

Before the car goes on a lift or jack, point the shop to the factory jacking points. Our listing says side skirts need careful jack placement, and the pads should never touch the carbon.

Our warranty is 1 year and covers defects in materials and workmanship. It doesn’t cover accidents, impacts or road debris, or damage from improper installation. Details are on our warranty page.

Pairing side skirts with a front lip and diffuser

BMW’s factory sills attach to the front and rear aprons, so a carbon side line looks best when the lip and diffuser match it.

Frequently asked questions

Do side skirt extensions replace the factory side skirts?

No. Our extensions mount under the factory side skirt, which stays on the car. They add a carbon edge below the sill. If you want the gloss black trim gone, you need a full replacement set.

Do the same side skirts fit the G80 M3 and G82 M4?

Our extensions do: the V2 and the small winglet set are listed for both. Our full replacement sets are made separately for the M3 and the M4, and BMW uses different part numbers for each car’s sill pieces.

Do I need to drill to fit full replacement side skirts?

Our M3 full replacement listings and the M4 MP style listing say no drilling is required. They use the OEM tabs and fixing points. Text us for the M4 OEM style set.

Can I get matte carbon side skirts?

Yes on the V2 extensions. The listing offers gloss or matte, and you tell us when you order if you want matte. Our photos show the gloss finish.

Will G80 M3 side skirts fit a G20 3 Series?

Our side skirts are listed for the G80 M3 and G82/G83 M4 only. They aren’t listed for the G20 3 Series, so we can’t say they’ll fit one.

Does the warranty cover curb damage?

No. Our 1-year warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship. It doesn’t cover accidents, impacts or road debris, or damage from improper installation.
