The back of a G80 M3 or G82 M4 has a lot of gloss-black plastic. A center diffuser sits around the four tailpipes, a trim strip runs around it, and there’s a corner piece at each side. A carbon rear diffuser replaces the biggest of those pieces. With the right parts around it, the whole lower edge of the bumper can be carbon.
This guide compares three carbon rear diffusers we sell: the D3, the MP style and the diffuser with an F1-style brake light. It also covers the trims and corner pieces that go with them, where the M3 and M4 parts differ, and what the install involves. For the G80 M3 only, there’s also an AD style diffuser.
Key takeaways
- The 3-piece D3 covers the bumper from corner to corner. The one-piece MP style is the simplest swap, and the F1 version adds a working LED brake light.
- The M3 and M4 have different rear bumpers. The D3 comes in an M3 or an M4 version, and the rear corner pieces are made for one car or the other.
- All of our parts in this guide are prepreg dry carbon and use the factory mounting points without cutting.
- The F1 brake-light diffuser is the biggest job. The rear bumper has to come off so the light can be wired to the brake circuit.
- On a road car, a diffuser is mostly about looks. Aerodynamic forces are small at legal speeds.

The parts at the back of the bumper

From the center outward, the lower edge of the M3 and M4 rear bumper has:
- The center diffuser, the finned panel around the tailpipes. It comes in black as standard and frames two pairs of 100 mm tips (BMW Group press release).
- The diffuser trim, a gloss-black strip that runs around the diffuser.
- The rear corner pieces, one at each side, below the taillights. These differ between the M3 and M4, because the sedan and the coupe have different rear bumpers.
A diffuser replaces the first piece. The trim and the corners are separate parts, so you can make the whole rear edge carbon in steps.
BMW’s own carbon diffuser comes in the M Carbon Exterior Package, along with carbon front intake inlays, mirror caps and a rear spoiler. On one 2025 M4 build, that package cost $4,700 (BMWBLOG). BMW’s separate M Performance carbon center diffuser only works with the M Performance exhaust.
D3: the 3-piece diffuser

The D3 is our own design. A center section boxes in each pair of tailpipes, and two corner extensions run out toward the rear wheels. Together they put a low carbon line along the base of the car, from wheel to wheel.
Order the M3 or M4 version to match your car, since the two bumpers differ. The D3 uses the factory mounting points and needs no cutting, so the factory parts can go back on. You can see one fitted to a G80 M3 in this video from the Anotherpull YouTube channel. At the time of writing, the D3 costs $1,399.
MP style: the simplest swap

The MP style diffuser is our best-selling diffuser, styled after BMW’s M Performance parts. The single piece has five vertical fins: three across the lowered center and one near each end. It replaces the factory diffuser using the factory hardware and clip locations.
It’s made for the factory exhaust, with a pair of tips at each side. BMW’s M Performance exhaust has its own matching diffuser. If your car has that exhaust, or tips in different positions, check with us first. The MP style is $629 at the time of writing.
Diffuser with an F1-style brake light

The F1-style diffuser is another of our own designs. It adds an LED light in the center, wired to the brake light circuit so it comes on when you brake. The look comes from the rear light on a Formula 1 car.
This diffuser is the biggest install of the three. The rear bumper has to come off so the light can be wired and the factory diffuser removed cleanly. Extra lights are also a matter of local law, so check your state’s rules before you wire it up (see the FAQ below). It’s $1,099 at the time of writing.
Diffuser trim and rear corners

The rear bumper diffuser trim replaces the gloss-black strip around the diffuser. It works with the factory diffuser and select aftermarket ones, and it bolts on without cutting.
The corners are where the M3 and M4 part ways, so each set below fits one car:
| Corner part | G80 M3 | G82/G83 M4 |
|---|---|---|
| Corners without winglets | M3 corners | M4 corners |
| MP style corners with winglets | M3 winglets | M4 winglets |
| Corner extensions | M3 extensions | M4 extensions |
The corners replace the factory gloss-black pieces. Those are held by four plastic clips each and come off with a pry tool. Pick the version without winglets if you want carbon corners without the small upright fins.
Do rear diffusers do anything on a road car?
Not much you can feel. Aerodynamic force grows with the square of speed, as former Formula 1 aerodynamicist Willem Toet explains in RaceTech. So at 60 mph, a part makes only about a third of the force it makes at 100 mph.
A diffuser on its own also adds less than you’d think. In a wind-tunnel test of a Hyundai Veloster N at 100 mph, a rear diffuser added about 15 lb of downforce at the back. But the front lost 14.5 lb, so the whole car gained about half a pound (Occam’s Racer). So buy a carbon diffuser because you like how it finishes the back of the car.
Fitting a rear diffuser
The D3, MP style and trim use the factory mounting points and clips and need no cutting or drilling. The factory diffuser is held by 10 mm bolts underneath and by clips with a lock inside that has to be pressed from inside the bumper. Owners who know the older F80 M3 often try to pull the diffuser straight off from below. We advise against it, because it takes a great deal of force. Taking the rear bumper off is easier.
The F1-style diffuser always needs the bumper off for the wiring. Rear corner pieces are the quickest job. Each factory piece comes off with a pry tool once its four clips are out.
Our install guide covers the job. If a part doesn’t fit the car listed on its product page, contact us before installing it and we’ll cover the return shipping for a refund or replacement.
Frequently asked questions
Will a diffuser fit with an aftermarket exhaust?
The D3 and MP style are shaped for the factory tailpipe positions, with two pairs of tips. If your exhaust moves the tips, or your car has BMW’s M Performance exhaust, send us a photo before you order.
Is the F1-style brake light legal?
It depends on where you live. The federal lighting standard says added lamps must not impair the required lights (FMVSS 108). Each state sets its own rules beyond that. California, for example, requires extra stop lamps to be red and at least 15 inches above the road (California Vehicle Code 24603). A diffuser sits lower than that. Wire it as a steady red brake light, never a flashing one, and check your state’s rules first.
Why do the M3 and M4 need different parts?
The M3 sedan and the M4 coupe and convertible have different rear bumpers. That’s why the D3 comes in two versions and the rear corner pieces are made for one car or the other.
Do these fit the M3 CS, M4 CS or M4 CSL?
Those cars leave the factory with their own carbon rear diffuser, so check with us before you order for one of them.
Can I go back to the factory diffuser later?
Yes. Nothing is cut or drilled, so the factory parts can go back on.
Which rear diffuser should you choose?
- The D3, if you want the whole rear edge in carbon in one go.
- The MP style, if you want the simplest swap at the lowest price. You can add the trim and corners later.
- The F1-style brake-light diffuser, if you want a look you won’t see on many other cars.
To finish the car, pair the rear with a front lip and a carbon grille, or see every rear diffuser in the shop.
