The BMW X3M Competition has 503 hp, and BMW kept that figure when it updated the car for 2022. What changed was torque and speed. For 2022, BMW raised Competition torque from 442 to 479 lb-ft and cut its 0-60 mph time from 4.0 to 3.7 seconds. That 2022 update is the LCI, BMW’s name for a mid-cycle refresh, and it also brought a new front end. Below are BMW’s figures for each year and what the Competition adds over the standard X3M, followed by which of our carbon parts fit your car.
Key takeaways
- US model years run from 2020 to 2024. The EPA lists no 2025 X3M.
- The X3M Competition has 503 hp. The standard X3M has 473 hp.
- 2020 and 2021 cars are pre-LCI: 442 lb-ft, 0-60 in 4.0 seconds for the Competition.
- 2022 to 2024 cars are LCI: 479 lb-ft, 0-60 in 3.7 seconds for the Competition, and a new front bumper.
- Front lips and grilles are generation-specific. Most of our rear spoilers, our 3-piece diffuser and our side skirt extensions fit both.
X3M Competition specs by model year
BMW writes the name as “X3 M”. Most people search for X3M, so we use that here. The car is the F97, built at BMW’s Spartanburg plant in South Carolina. Its coupe-style sibling, the X4M, is the F98.
All figures below come from BMW’s US press releases for the 2020 launch and the 2022 update. Fuel economy is the EPA combined rating from fueleconomy.gov.
| Model year | Version | Power | Torque | 0-60 mph | EPA combined |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2020 and 2021 | X3M | 473 hp | 442 lb-ft | 4.1 sec | 16 mpg |
| 2020 and 2021 | X3M Competition | 503 hp | 442 lb-ft | 4.0 sec | 16 mpg |
| 2022 to 2024 | X3M | 473 hp | 457 lb-ft | 3.9 sec | 17 mpg |
| 2022 to 2024 | X3M Competition | 503 hp | 479 lb-ft | 3.7 sec | 17 mpg |
We found no later BMW USA release that changed these numbers for 2023 or 2024. The EPA lists the same 3.0-liter six and 8-speed automatic for every year.
2020 and 2021 X3M: the pre-LCI cars
BMW revealed the first X3M and X4M in February 2019 as 2020 models. Production started in April 2019. Both used BMW’s then-new S58, a 3.0-liter M TwinPower Turbo inline-six, with an 8-speed M Steptronic automatic and M xDrive all-wheel drive. BMW says the system pairs all-wheel-drive traction with the feel of rear-wheel drive.
For 2020, both versions made 442 lb-ft. BMW quoted 0-60 mph in 4.1 seconds for the X3M and 4.0 seconds for the Competition. MotorWeek tested a 2020 X3M Competition and matched BMW’s 4.0-second claim, running the quarter mile in 12.3 seconds at 116 mph.
Top speed was limited to 155 mph. With the optional M Driver’s Package, BMW raised it to 173 mph on the X3M and 177 mph on the Competition. BMW lists the 2020 X3M at 4,620 lb.

2022 X3M: what changed at the LCI
BMW announced the updated X3M and X4M in June 2021 as 2022 models, with US sales from September 2021. The engine got the forged lightweight crankshaft from the M3 and M4. That let BMW raise torque to 457 lb-ft on the X3M and 479 lb-ft on the Competition, while horsepower stayed the same.
The 0-60 times dropped to 3.9 seconds for the X3M and 3.7 seconds for the Competition. BMW lists top speed at 155 mph, or 177 mph with the M Driver’s Package.
Most of the visible changes were at the front. BMW’s global press release lists:
- A larger kidney grille with a one-piece frame, split by a black bar that holds the front camera.
- Headlights about 10 mm (0.4 inch) flatter.
- New side air intakes, tall and vertical, angled down toward the lip.
- Full-LED tail lights on the X3M, with a black surround and narrower light graphics.
- A 12.3-inch Control Display and a new M gear selector and control panel on the console.
In the US, BMW’s release lists the 2022 X3M at $69,900, plus $995 destination.

2023 and 2024: the last X3M years
The X3M stayed in the same LCI form through the 2024 model year. On fueleconomy.gov, the X3M and X3M Competition appear for 2020 through 2024, with no 2025 entry. The new X3 that BMW launched for 2025 comes as the X3 30 xDrive and the X3 M50 xDrive, per BMW’s US release. So 2024 was the last X3M model year in the US.
The X4M ran one year longer. The EPA lists 2025 X4M and X4M Competition models.
X3M vs X3M Competition: what the Competition adds
Both versions use the same S58. The Competition gets more power from BMW’s tune, plus the extra equipment listed in BMW’s 2020 and 2022 releases.
| Feature | X3M | X3M Competition |
|---|---|---|
| Power | 473 hp | 503 hp |
| Torque, 2022 to 2024 | 457 lb-ft | 479 lb-ft |
| Standard wheels | 20-inch | 21-inch |
| Exhaust | Base M exhaust | M Sport exhaust, black chrome tips (2020) |
| Anti-roll bars | Model-specific | Larger |
| Grille surround, mirror caps, M gills | Standard finish | High-gloss black |
| Top speed with M Driver’s Package (2020) | 173 mph | 177 mph |
For 2022, BMW added M forged Star-Spoke 892M wheels in Jet Black to the Competition.
MotorWeek put the 2020 X3M Competition’s base price at $77,895, about $7,000 over the standard X3M. Used prices depend on year, miles and options, so check current listings.
If you’re shopping for carbon, keep that high-gloss black trim in mind: mirror caps and kidney grilles are exactly the parts a carbon upgrade replaces.

How to tell a pre-LCI X3M from an LCI
In the US, a 2020 or 2021 X3M is pre-LCI. A 2022, 2023 or 2024 car is LCI. Our product pages list pre-LCI fitment as 2019 to 2021. That’s because BMW started building the cars in April 2019.
At the car, look at the grille. A pre-LCI has two separate kidneys. An LCI has one frame that holds both, with a black bar in the middle. The LCI also has slimmer headlights and taller side intakes. For a full walk-through with photos, see our X3M and X4M LCI vs pre-LCI guide.
If you’re still not sure, text us a photo of your front bumper at 609-525-4865.

Which of our parts fit a pre-LCI or LCI X3M?
Front parts follow the bumper, so they’re generation-specific. Rear and side parts mostly fit both. Prices are at the time of writing (October 2026). Prices change, so check the product page.

A few notes from the listings:
- The rear spoiler wing is our best-selling X3M part. It fits the X3M only, not a regular X3.
- The Unit 17 diffuser reuses the factory screw holes. It doesn’t fit the X4M.
- The SOOQOO diffuser isn’t compatible with the factory automatic towbar.
- The side skirt extensions stop just short of the factory underglow light, so it keeps working.
- The hood listing recommends professional installation and warns that minor fitment adjustment may be needed.
- The seat back covers mount over the factory seat backs with double-sided tape, with no cutting or drilling.
Some listings, like the grilles and the SQ Style lip, name the X3M Competition in their fitment. If you have a standard X3M, ask us before ordering.
