G80 M3 & G82 M4 LCI vs Pre-LCI: What Changed and What Still Fits

Close-up of the headlight on a 2025 BMW M4 Competition, with the front radar panel in the grille

For the 2025 model year, the G80 M3 and the G82/G83 M4 got their mid-life update, which BMW calls an LCI (Life Cycle Impulse). The update changed the lights, the interior and the software, and left the body alone.

If you’re buying carbon parts, the outside is the easy part. The bumpers, grille and body panels didn’t change, so exterior parts made for 2021 to 2024 cars fit the updated cars too. Interior trim is a different story, because the cabin changed twice.

Key takeaways

  • The 2025 model year is the first LCI year for the US M3 and M4. Earlier cars (2021 to 2024) are pre-LCI.
  • Outside, BMW changed the lights and badges. Both cars get new headlights, and the M4 gets laser taillights. The body, grille and bumpers are the same.
  • Inside, there are three generations: the original dashboard, the curved display (M3s built from July 2022, M4s from March 2023) and the 2025 iDrive 8.5 update.
  • Exterior carbon parts fit both, including grilles, front lips, side skirts and diffusers. Interior trims have to match your car’s generation.
  • Only the M3 and M4 Competition xDrive got more power. They went up 20 hp, to 523 hp.

Which years are LCI?

In the US, model year 2025 is the first LCI year for both cars. BMW started building the updated M4 in March 2024 (BMW Group, 2025 M4) and the updated M3 in July 2024 (BMW Group, 2025 M3). Every 2021 to 2024 car is pre-LCI.

The interior also changed once before the LCI. BMW fitted the curved display, running iDrive 8, to the M3 from July 2022 production (BimmerFile). The M4 got it from March 2023 (BMW Group, spring 2023 updates). So M3s built from July 2022 and M4s built from March 2023 have the new screen without the rest of the LCI changes.

Model year G80 M3 G82/G83 M4
2021–2022 Pre-LCI, original dashboard Pre-LCI, original dashboard
2023 Pre-LCI, curved display (iDrive 8) Pre-LCI, original dashboard (curved display from March 2023 production)
2024 Pre-LCI, curved display (iDrive 8) Pre-LCI, curved display (iDrive 8)
2025 and later LCI, iDrive 8.5 LCI, iDrive 8.5

What changed on the outside

Both cars get new LED headlights, with arrow-shaped running lights that double as turn signals. The M4 gets laser taillights as standard, a design first seen on the M4 CSL (BMW Group, 2025 M4). The M3 sedan keeps its original taillights.

Competition models get new surrounds for the badges at the rear, and there’s a new forged wheel option. The M4 also gets optional M design graphics.

What stayed the same

Almost everything you’d fit carbon parts to is unchanged. BMW left the kidney grille “completely untouched” (BMWBLOG). The body panels and both bumpers are the same as before (Carscoops).

What changed inside

A 2025 cabin, with the curved display running iDrive 8.5 and carbon center trim.

The 2025 cars run iDrive 8.5 on the curved display. The standard steering wheel now has a flat-bottomed rim and revised spokes, with a red marker at 12 o’clock. The center air vents have new adjustment controls (BMW Group, 2025 M3).

Because the vents and trim changed, interior carbon parts are made for one generation at a time. Our iDrive 8.5 front air vent cover and center interior trim fit 2025 and later cars. The iDrive 8 air vent cover is made for the curved-display cars built before the update.

What changed under the hood

Only the all-wheel-drive Competition models got more power. The 2025 M3 and M4 Competition xDrive make 523 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque. That’s 20 hp more than before. The rear-drive Competition stays at 503 hp, and the manual M3 at 473 hp.

We list our exterior parts for these cars as fitting 2021 to 2027. Every product page shows the exact years it fits. For grilles, the one thing to check on any year is the front radar. Our grille radar and badge guide shows how.

How to tell which car you have

  • Your registration or window sticker shows the model year. Any 2025 or later car is LCI.
  • In the headlights, the LCI’s running lights are arrow-shaped strips. Earlier cars have two ring-shaped lights in each headlight.
  • A flat-bottomed factory steering wheel points to an LCI car.
  • One long curved display means an M3 built from July 2022 or an M4 built from March 2023. A separate center screen means an earlier car.

What about 2026 and 2027?

We haven’t seen BMW announce major changes to the G80 M3 or G82 M4 for the 2026 or 2027 model years. BMWBLOG reports that G80 production is expected to continue until later in 2027 (BMWBLOG, October 2026). Exterior parts made for the LCI cars fit the 2026 and 2027 cars.

Frequently asked questions

Will a pre-LCI front lip fit a 2025 M3?

Yes. Lips made for 2021 to 2024 cars fit the LCI cars, because BMW didn’t change the front bumper. Our front lip guide compares them.

Does the 2025 M3 get the M4’s laser taillights?

No. The laser taillights are standard on the 2025 M4 coupe and convertible. The M3 sedan keeps its original taillights.

Did the grille change for 2025?

No. The grille shape is the same, so every carbon grille made for 2021 to 2024 cars also fits the 2025 cars. As on any year, check for the front radar first. Our carbon grille guide compares the styles.

Will interior carbon trims from a 2022 M3 fit a 2025 M3?

Usually not. The dashboard changed with the curved display and again with iDrive 8.5, so interior trims are made for one generation. Check the years on the product page.

Is the 2025 M3 faster?

Only the Competition xDrive, which gained 20 hp. The other versions have the same power as before.

The bottom line

If you own a 2021 to 2024 M3 or M4, the LCI doesn’t make your exterior parts outdated. Grilles, lips, side skirts and diffusers fit both. Inside, match the trim to your dashboard. See all our parts for the G80 M3 or the G82/G83 M4.
